Chinwag with Adelle Stripe

As you know by now, Chinwag loves to celebrate local heroes, so we’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming Adelle Stripe to the Chinwag settee for a Summer Special chat about life and whatever else comes up.

2017 has been quite year for Adelle; she was invited to perform her poem, The Humber Star, at John Grant’s North Atlantic Flux at Hull 2017 (described by the FT as a work of ‘fantastic depth and poignancy’) and has just published her debut novel ‘Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile’, inspired by the life and work of Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar. Best known for her classic black comedy ‘Rita, Sue and Bob Too!’, Dunbar wrote three plays before dying at a tragically young age. This new literary portrayal features a cast of real and imagined characters set against the backdrop of the infamous Buttershaw estate during the Thatcher era.

We highly recommend this utterly compelling and beautiful book; it’s a proper bittersweet, poignant kitchen sink noir that tells the journey of a shy Bradford girl who defied the circumstances into which she was born and went on to become one of her generation’s greatest dramatists.

Adelle Stripe was born in York, grew up in Tadcaster, and lives in the Calder Valley so we’re equally delighted to be celebrating a local artist and her amazing new work. Published by Hull’s Wrecking Ball Press, there’ll be copies of ‘Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile’ available to buy on the evening.

As ever, we are supporting MAP, a Leeds based charity who run music and art programmes for young people at risk of exclusion from mainstream education. A really wonderful charity doing really wonderful things.
